Suddenly, I am overwhelmed with a newfound sympathy for English teachers and college application essay readers everywhere.

It is my job as editor to type up the candidate profiles for the state Latin Club elections in May. Each candidate wrote a few hundred-word bio.

So far, most of them cannot punctuate, and none of them have a grasp of writing a legible essay. I would fail them all. No wonder they take Latin and don't talk about their English. Strunk & White can be your friend, if you let it!

I am NOT going to proofread for them, except where it renders the submission illegible or I can't take it anymore. Instead, I will append a note to the effect that the writing is the candidates' own, not mine.

So, distract me so I don't rip anyone's head off by phone. Please?
