I'm currently in mid-chapter five, and will try to get all my words for today posted this evening. Here's the rest of Chapter Two. Chapters Three and Four to follow. In this chapter, I try to address that major flaw of fantasy novels: Where do the characters get their food? This is only 312 words--there wasn't much left to this chapter.

The next day, the pair arrived in Hornin, a village along the road to Preglith. No sooner had Lindau set foot on the main street than she was the center of a crowd of people, all asking for her help.

“Help my baby, he’s been sickly—“

“The last rites for my mother—“

“Help me—“

“Help me—“

“Help me—“

“I’ll help you!” Lindau had to shout to be heard over the din. “But only one at a time, I can’t be everywhere at once!”

Corrin automatically stepped in. “Work out among yourselves who is in greatest need of help. Go on, don’t crowd. He’ll help you all.”

The people, who had mostly ignored Corrin in favor of Lindau and the free aid she represented, looked at him. They took in his clothes, the badge of the Partelarra Guard sewn onto the shoulder. A whisper went around the crowd: “He’s from the Guard!” “The Guard!” Soon Corrin found himself at the center of a second crowd of people, clamoring for his help in this or that dispute.

“Wonderful,” Lindau remarked to him quietly. “Now neither of us’ll get a moment’s peace.”

“It’s a saying that the Guard is never off-duty,” said Corrin. “Looks like it here.”

The pair spent the rest of the day in Hornin. Having no real power, Corrin warned the people who were reported to him as criminals that the center of the Guard was never far away. Lindau patched up sprained bones and soothed fevers, but most of her time was simply spent letting people talk to her. It seemed to make them feel better. Together, Corrin and Lindau wrote letters for the unlettered and helped the old make wills. In return, they were put up in the smith’s loft for the night and given food the next morning to speed them on their way.
