HP fic; gen; "The Consequences Quartet"
Because I can always find a reason not to do my homework.
The Consequences Quartet
Harry Potter; First War; gen with mentioned James/Lily; PG perhaps; 100 words per.
Summary: Getting what you want and need is good, but sometimes there are unforeseen consequences.
Sirius was thrilled by the war more than anything. Younger, he had loved stories of adventure. Now he could live them. He would fight the forces of darkness, and be the hero he had always yearned to be.
He was having the time of his life.
One morning the Ministry contacted him. They needed him to identify a body. Sirius shrugged, and went.
The body was ripped almost to shreds. It hardly looked human. But the branded left arm was untouched, and the face.
His brother's face.
Sirius had always wanted to live war. He hadn't known it would hurt.
Remus knew, leaving school, that he would have trouble finding a job. In his father's world, he was a menace; in his mother's, all but nonexistent. When Professor Dumbledore offered him a job, he accepted.
He had to travel a lot, where no one could contact him. He couldn't talk about it.
He wasn't there when his parents were killed, when Harry was born.
He saw the way the family looked at him at the funeral, the way his friends looked when they saw him. Suspicious.
Remus had needed a job. He hadn't known it would cost him his friends.
James loved Lily. He had always intended to marry her someday; the war only made it sooner. He loved living with her, loved being with her, loved everything about her. He loved Harry, their precious baby, almost as much.
When he heard Voldemort was after them, he wanted to fight, brave it out as he and Lily had always done. Dumbledore said no, their child was too valuable to risk. James knew this was true, so he went into hiding. Still, it chafed on him.
James had wanted to protect his family. He hadn't known that would mean hiding.
Peter didn't go home after sixth year, or seventh. He visited for one day, to say goodbye, and left again. He didn't know what was going on exactly, but his mother was a Muggle, and she would die (like Laura Eckles's mother had) if he was near her.
Before he left, she hugged him and said, "Promise me you won't get yourself killed. Promise me you won't be a hero."
He promised. He wasn't a hero, he just did what he had to do. For his mother.
Peter needed to survive. He hadn't known it would be him or his friends.
