Operation: Distract me from writing my final paper is a go.

By which I mean, give me something to run to when thinking of things to say in Japanese about my hometown gets too boring. Meme from [livejournal.com profile] etrangere.

The Hypothetical AU Meme: Take any one of the fandoms you know I write in, and give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, Ancient Rome, etc). I will then explain what story from your chosen fandom I would write for your chosen type of AU.

...I'm not entirely sure what that means. *somehow has dodged the Rand-bullet*

You mean other than the one they're in? You asked for it. Also, you get my favorite characters as Our Doomed Heroes, because I felt like it.

The words were painted on the wall in green. Freedom of Personality or Death!! they proclaimed. The man standing next to them grinned wolfishly at the royal soldiers standing in a wide circle around him.

"There're fifteen of you an' just one of me, I'll give you that," he drawled, "but here's the thing: I got two gun, six bullets in each, and you only got swords. I can shoot a man dead at a hundred yards, and by the time you cover that ground I can fire all twelve bullets. Granted, I'm not gonna be able to get three of ya, whatever happens. You got a twenty percent chance of being one of those three. One chance in five. D'you feel lucky?"

The soldiers hesitated. Men like this didn't talk like that, didn't throw probability around like they knew what it meant. While they were hesitating, the man started shooting. Four of them dropped before the rest started moving. Still, he didn't have time to reload. Three guards were enough to knock him unconscious.

The Redemption Hospital, as it was euphemistically called, was almost entirely underground. The ground helped to muffle the screaming. Xigbar woke up already strapped to the metal table.

"Do you know why you're here?" asked a voice from the shadows.

"Maybe 'cause I didn't have time to modify my guns to fire more'n six bullets each?" he replied, smirking.

He was ready for the shock when it came. "You are here," said the voice, "because you have selfishly transgressed against the rules put here for your security. You attended school, Xigbar. You know that we all have our parts to play in this perfect society. You know that this is good, and right. You know that you have been placed in the situation to which you are best suited. Why, then, do you struggle against those who only have your good in mind?"

The voice made everything it said sound perfectly reasonable, but Xigbar was too angry, too full of the cold rage that had become part of his every waking moment, for its magic to effect him. "I know," he said clearly that you're a fucking sadistic bitch with delusions of godhood. And you have no idea what I'm suited for."

The voice sounded regretful. "It seems a pity, but you truly are beyond redemption. Perhaps you can regain your proper place before the end." A slender, white hand flipped the switch on what Xigbar knew was an electrical current generator, probably worked through ionization.

He screamed, just once, then managed to bite back the rest. The Fairy Godmother bent over him, her voice still soothing. "Remember, Xigbar? Anyone who looks at you can tell what role you play, you small-minded killer and seducer of innocents. Forget about learning. That isn't for you. You're the big bad wolf, remember?"

"Kinetic energy," Xigbar told her, "is the energy of motion, and is equal to half the product of the object's mass and the square of its velocity. In contrast, potential energy indicated the energy expended to move an object against gravity, and equals the mass times the acceleration of gravity times the height the object has been lifted from the--"

The Fairy Godmother turned and went out, but Xigbar kept talking, repeating to himself and anyone who might be listening all the things he wasn't supposed to know, even as he felt his skin blacken and his flesh begin to burn, using the words to beat back the pain, until he fell back at last on repeating the periodic table of the elements inside his mind.

Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium, Beryllium, Boron, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, Neon--

Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium, Beryllium, Boron--

Hydrogen, Helium--

Hydrogen--

So. Yeah. Welcome to the "fanon characterization will be strictly enforced" dystopia. No, I don't know where that came from. But as you can see, Xigbar doesn't approve of being stupidified.

That. Was.

Holy crap, you should expand on this idea. I... I really think you should. If not, I might take the idea from you because this is a beautiful idea.

XD. I think I'd like to expand on this, because it would be really heaps of fun to see everyone being broken to little bits under these roles that don't allow them to be everything they are. Message fantasy, much? But 'twould be fun to write.
